David Knaap leads the firm’s Aviation Law Group and is a partner in the Insurance Law and Litigation Groups. He is a Law Society of NSW Accredited Specialist with wide experience in many areas of litigation and dispute resolution.
Prior to becoming a lawyer David served as an Army Officer in the Australian Regular Army flying helicopters. After he qualified as a fixed wing and rotary wing pilot he was selected for instructor training in the United States and subsequently underwent the US Army’s maintenance test pilot’s course. During his service he flew a variety of fixed and rotary wing aircraft throughout Australia and various parts of the world. He was promoted Captain in 1986. He remains in the Reserve as a Staff Officer in the Aviation Corps.
He has specialist knowledge on matters involving aircraft which can only be gained by extensive flying experience. David has provided advice to corporations proposing to supply the Australian Defence Force with major aircraft defence capability. He is a member of the Helicopter Association of Australasia and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of Australia.
In March 2007 David Knaap was invited to be a speaker at both the 12th Australian International Aerospace Congress held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Melbourne and the Helicopters at Work Symposium held at the Australian International Airshow 2007 at Avalon Airport.
Since joining the firm David has primarily practised in litigation both in NSW and the ACT mainly for insurers, self insurers and large corporations with high excess levels. He also acts for private clients in these areas.
He is based at the firm’s Sydney office but attends the Parramatta, Newcastle and Canberra offices to interview clients.
