Colin Goldrick is partner in charge of Intellectual Property at Goldrick Farrell Mullan.

Goldrick Farrell Mullan has expertise in assisting organisations with the protection and commercialisation of their intellectual property rights, whether it is in the form of patents, trade marks, copyright, trade secrets or know-how. 

Our professionals have worked with a wide range of organisations including small inventors, academic and research institutions and multinational corporations.  The work we undertake is similarly varied, encompassing all aspects of the development and commercialisation process, from advising on licensing terms and collaborative research agreements, through to the establishment of joint ventures and global exploitation arrangements.

Areas of expertise include:

  • We advise on all aspects of product branding and trade mark strategies both locally and globally, including advising on the effectiveness of marks and protecting our client’s rights in the event of an infringement
  • The development and licensing of software products and the licensing of academic and other course material
  • All aspects of the protection of inventions including patents and designs
  • We can assist in the development of strategies and procedures to identify potentially patentable inventions and ensure that the patentability of these inventions is maintained through the development process

GFM projects include:

  • Advising on the commercialisation of a solar energy generation plant, including assignment of the technology, the establishment of pilot and production facilities and the development of a royalty stream based on output over the life of the plants
  • Advising in the development and establishment of a global brand for wine and associated products, including fundraising and negotiating promotion and licensing arrangements
  • Advice to software companies on the Copyright Act and a wide range of protection and infringement issues relating to computer software
  • Advice to a Risk Management Consulting Firm regarding rights in relation to a risk management program (not software)
  • Advice to a clothing and personal goods manufacturer in relation to the applicability of this act to slogans, voice grabs and other “quotable quotes”
  • Advised electronics manufacturer in relation to copyright protection and circumvention devices
  • Advising on the restructuring of a patent portfolio of nine separate patent families, licensing agreements and manufacturing agreements for a pharmaceutical company
